Yoga, meditation and essential oils

It is known that yoga and meditation can help calm and relax one's body and mind. However using essential oils in the process can help alleviate this experience to a greater level of peace and serenity. Essential oils can be diffused or sprayed in the room or space that the yoga session is being held or alternatively your personal favorite essential oils can be diluted and used on the individuals on the wrist or temples before the beginning of the session.

Essential oils that can bring a serene effect to any meditation are:

Lavender essential oil is commonly used for stress relief and relaxation. There’s also strong evidence that lavender can help treat headaches and migraines. According to researchers, aromatic and topical use of lavender oil affects the limbic system because the main constituents, linalool and linalyl acetate, are rapidly absorbed through the skin and are thought to cause central nervous system depression. It also regulates serotonin levels, which helps minimize pain in the nervous system that can lead to migraine attacks. Breathing in the scent from lavender essential oil can help acute management of migraine headaches.

Peppermint essential oil contains menthol, which can help muscles relax and ease pain. It’s thought that applying diluted peppermint oil directly to the temples can help relieve pain from both tension headaches and migraines. It also promotes mental alertness and unclogs sinuses and overall has a calming effect on the body.

Ylang Ylang essential oil helps release feelings of anxiety and tension. Adding Ylang Ylang to your environment helps calm the heartbeat and brings breathing to a harmonious pattern. Ylang Ylang aroma has been shown to be relaxing and decreased blood pressure in many small studies. One study found that Ylang Ylang aroma calmed the nervous system, leading to lower heart rate and blood pressure and heart rhythms on electrocardiogram (EKG).
