Spring is a beautiful time to be outside but it is also a season of allergies for some. Today, 40 to 60 million Americans are affected by allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, and the numbers continue to grow, especially in children, causing runny or bleeding nose, sneezing, dry, itchy or watery eyes, hives, nausea and headaches.
Thankfully, some essential oils help fight the inflammation, boost the immune system and serve as a natural and safe way to treat the symptoms of allergies. These essential oils have the ability to detoxify the body, overcome hypersensitivity and fight infections, bacteria and harmful toxins.
1. Peppermint essential oil - is an expectorant which can provide immediate relief for those struggling with congestion by aiding in clearing phlegm. Inhaling diffused Peppermint oil will oftentimes help minimize inflammation while promoting the feeling of easy breathing through open airways. Mix peppermint with lavender for a soothing massage that will ease headaches.
2. Eucalyptus essential oil - often referred to as a “cool oil”, is an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant and a great treatment for any respiratory ailments. It can help you clear your sinuses, reduce chest pressure and wheezing, and help detoxify your body of any allergens. Eucalyptus essential oil can also soothe a sore throat and help reduce coughing. To treat allergies, put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in an aromatherapy diffuser and breathe in the healing particles. You can also put a few drops in a steaming bowl of water, place a towel over your head and the bowl, and breathe deeply for a few minutes.
3. Lavender essential oil - is a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory and oftentimes a prime option for treating yourself while in the middle of an allergic reaction. Use topically to soothe and calm skin irritations. Diffuse lavender to reduce inflammation in bronchial tubes.
Another great benefit of lavender is that its soothing properties will also work to help relaxation. Diffuse it before bedtime to encourage a more restful sleep.
4. Tea Tree essential oil - is one of the most powerful oils that can help destroy airborne pathogens and allergy triggers that cause allergies. Diffusing tea tree in the home will kill mold, bacteria and fungi. It is an antiseptic agent and it has anti-inflammatory properties. It also is an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, so it can be applied directly to the area with hives and rashes to kill bacteria and microorganisms. It is recommended that you mix it will a carrier oil like argan or jojoba before direct application to the skin.
